Katie sat in a camp chair in one of the back corners of Alaric’s tent. She hadn’t been in Darimbia long, just a couple of days, but she was restless. She’d left her mother’s castle hoping to find adventure, but sitting here inside a tent didn’t feel anything like adventure. Who could have imagined that war could be so dull?

“Alaric, can I go outside and walk around the camp?”

He looked up from the candles he was holding. “It’s getting dark. I was just going to get these candles lit. How about if you help me?” He raised an eyebrow. “You might like to practice some magic.”

Candles. The simplest feat there was. He probably wasn’t patronizing her though. Practice was a good idea, but right now she had no heart for it. “I could use some fresh air.”

“All right, just don’t go far. It’ll be night soon.”

“I won’t go past the sentries.” It wasn’t much different from being stuck inside her mother’s castle, just a bigger area to be stuck inside, and at least the people here treated her kindly.

“Fine.” He put one of the candles inside a lamp and flicked his fingers. The candle burst into flame.

Katie stood to leave the tent, but a commotion rose outside just before she reached the door. An instant later, Marco and Lem burst in.

“There’s good news,” Marco said, still breathing hard.

“And bad,” Lem added.

Alaric sighed. “Sit.” He gestured toward the chairs that were stacked in one corner of the tent and sat in the one chair next to the table that held a map of the province. He looked over to where Katie still stood near the door. “Youre welcome to join us.”

This boded to be more interesting than anything going on in the camp outside. Katie pulled up her own chair.

“Now, then,” Alaric said with a nod toward the two men, “bad news first.”

“Claudia’s army is on the move,” Marco said.

“What, again? I was hoping she’d stay put for a few days, and we could all catch our breath.”

“Yeah.” Marco grimaced.

“They’re heading past Humpback Mountain toward Shelter Ridge, the one that angles down toward the river,” Lem added, pointing to a spot on the map. “Probably hoping to claim the high ground.”

“And block us from advancing toward the mines,” Marco said.

Katie looked at the map, frowning. “Over there?” She indicated an area beyond where Lem said the enemy troops were.

“Yes.” Alaric said.

No one spoke for a few moments. They all studied the map, as the sounds of their own soldiers preparing their dinners, joking and laughing, filled the tent. People who might be dead in a few days if Alaric made the wrong decision here and now.

Katie nibbled at a fingernail.

“We could try to get there first,” Marco said at last. “Claim the high ground and give them a little surprise.”

“Hmm.” Alaric’s eyes moved left, right, as he studied the map. “Can we get there before they do?”

Lem cleared his throat. “They’re moving their whole army. A lot of people and equipment. They’re pretty slow.
